SMEs and Sustainability: More Than Compliance, a Competitive Edge
ESG data is becoming a competitive lever for SMEs, helping them meet customer and lender expectations, manage risk and support access to finance.

According to Il Sole 24 Ore (9 February 2026), although SMEs are largely exempt from direct reporting obligations, they are facing growing ESG demands from major customers and banks. Reliable, comparable data is therefore becoming a lever to strengthen competitive positioning, manage risk and facilitate access to financing and supply chains.
The issue remains current, and only two weeks ago ICAEW/Accountancy Europe (17 August 2026) noted that, despite EU regulatory simplification, the sustainability business case for SMEs remains strong: understanding and communicating performance can support access to credit, resilience, customer retention and the acquisition of contracts with large companies.
In Italy, however, a Unioncamere-Mediobanca-Tagliacarne survey published on 5 August 2026 shows the main obstacle: three out of four medium-sized companies face difficulties with digital and green investments, mainly due to upfront costs (41.2%) and regulatory uncertainty (34%).
In this scenario, the support of specialised consultancy can help SMEs navigate an evolving regulatory framework and the various ESG management and assessment systems, identifying the most suitable tools for the requirements of customers, supply chains and target markets.
